Early in 2009 the RIA announced that negotiations with Broadwater were off.  They also announced that they would be seeking another proponent to build a hotel at Mt Herschel - and this is covered in the the draft Rottnest Island Management Plan that is now open for public comment.

April 2009

The images below were the original supplied by Broadwater when they were announced as the preferred proponent in 2007.  We understand changes were made to the design but we do not know what changes.  The questions we were asking in 2007 have never been answered and should be now.  The Society recently submitted a list of questions on this matter but have not received any reply.  This cannot be described

as 'low impact' on the landscape.  We do believe that there has been some modification of the overall height but don't know how much.

  • The back row of buildings will be silhouetted against the sky - as you can see most of the trees are not really there.

  • There appears to be nothing about this building that is sympathetic to Rottnest and existing buildings

  • The Rottnest buildings are uniquely Rottnest - this could be any urban apartments.

  • This hotel will dominate Longreach Bay.

  • Noise from functions and conferences will ruin the peace of Longreach and Fay's Bay villas - try living 100 metres from a function centre over the water.

  • 60,000-90,000 extra overnight visitors a year to this hotel.  The Rottnest Island Authority has not carried out research on the impact of the 500,000 visitors it presently has - and the beaches and headlands are degrading badly, with very little funding available to do conservation work.

  • What impact will it have on traffic between Thomson's Bay and Geordie Bay/Longreach?

Arhive 2007 Read what RIA says about the proposed hotel.  Public comment on the hotel closed on 21st February after an inadequate one month public comment period.  Read some submissions from members of the public here.

Then on 23rd February, because of pressure from us and other members of the public, the RIA announced that it needed to amend the Rottnest Island Management Plan to rezone the land on which it would be built from 'Service and Operation'.  We are currently in the middle of a public comment period for the proposed amendments - closing on 23rd April.
