RALLY FOR ROTTNEST!

14th January 2007

PETITION the Premier of Western Australia

Purpose of this Petition

To get the government to honour a written commitment to put the concept plans for the proposed new hotel on Rottnest out for public comment so that you can have a chance to have your say.

SIGN Petition

BACKGROUND

The current Rottnest Island Management Plan (RIMP) 2003-2008 is the statutory document which determines how Rottnest is managed during this period.  The current RIMP does NOT include provision for a hotel at Mt Herschel.

The Rottnest Island Taskforce established in 2003 made a series of recommendations for managing Rottnest which were largely accepted by the government but which have never been subjected to a public comment process.  The Taskforce Report is not a gazetted statutory document.

On 10th January 2007 Tourism Minister Sheila McHale announced the go-ahead for the proposed new hotel development on Rottnest Island - without a public comment period.

However on 5th November 2005 then Tourism Minister Mark McGowan said that the concept plans would go our for public comment.  In a number of meetings during 2006 Rottnest Island Authority CEO, Paolo Amaranti, assured Rottnest Society committee members that the concept plans would go out for public comment.

We acted in good faith, advising our members via our Newsletter on a number of occasions that we would all have a chance to comment when the concept plans went out for public comment - and that that was the appropriate time.

The Minister has not kept faith with the public.

When you sign the on-line petition your signature and comments are added to a data base and held there until the petition closes.  The petition is then delivered to the Premier.

Campaign background information

There is now a public comment period for the new hotel but very badly publicised so not many people know about it - so we keep going!
