The dreaded awn mower…(From a Rottnest Society Newsletter)

Noted recently at Rottnest by one of our committee members was… wait for it… a mower mowing the onion grass - ok it was in the settlement area.  It is amazing though how that little bit of mowing of the onion grass provides a more park-like appearance where otherwise a more natural landscape exists.  We ask 'does this mown area gradually extend more and more with each mowing?  How far would it go?  Does a person with a mower know when to stop? We ask 'why would someone mow onion grass?'  Does the RIA want to turn the whole settlement area into a park-like landscape?  This in our view is totally undesirable - it takes away from the more natural look of the landscape, or so we think.

Note – this was in 2002 and it was still happening in mid-2004.
